The historic Thomas Wells house, built in 1785, is a center-chimney farmhouse on 1 1/2 acres of gardens created by award winning landscape designer, Louis Raymond. In the mid 19th century, a house from Northern RI was transported and added to the house creating an "L" which now encloses a dining terrace with a stone table under a 20 year old beech tree adjacent to a "terrace kitchen". Many updates, improvements and replacements done (a complete list available) over the years including two new high end kitchens all done with respect for the historic home. When rebuilding the front hall, floorboards were harvested from the attic. In addition to the 3352 square foot house, there is a coach house on the property (that has not been renovated). The gardens include a large reflecting pool, hidden terraces, exotic plants and much more and have for many years been open to the public at least once a year. A separate vegetable garden is on the property as well. Lovingly maintained and restored, this house must be seen to be appreciated. Located one mile from I-95 and only 15 minutes to Watch Hill and Westerly beaches.
